Jessica's Analysis
This song is just so darn mushy! For someone like me, it's a little overboard in the mush, but a lot of people love this song. It's a very heartfelt song between lovers with a gorgeous melody and excellent vocal quality. Here's the breakdown: The character singing the song is away from home and is an emotional mess. ("Waiting for your call I'm sick, call I'm angry, call I'm desperate...") He/she is recalling memories and playing the couple's favorite song on repeat. I believe the next verse is about sex, or at least physical closeness, ("You and me, flesh to flesh, 'cause every breath that you will take when you are sitting next to me will bring life into my deepest hopes. What's your fantasy?") and then the song finishes out with a thought that all of this loneliness makes the character want to go home to the object of his/her affections/desires.
Please understand that my opinion doesn't have to be yours. If you disagree, strike up a conversation about it! That's the design of the Project. We'll all learn a little somethin'.
This reminds me of a guy I lived next door to in college. His girlfriend broke up with him, and he kept playing the same song by Gavin Degraw over and over and over for two days straight... I could hear it through the holes in the wall. It was ridiculous. And no, it WASN'T me!
ReplyDeleteBut, this song, as Jessica noted, evokes loneliness and heartsickness. It's not that they're broken up, like my depressed dorm douchebag, but they're apart, and he's lost in the thought they're so far apart. In this case, it's physically, not emotionally.
And think about that line about calling - that's kind of like, calling someone just to listen to their voice on the voicemail message or on the answering machine (remember REAL answering machines?). Willing to hear ANYTHING, just to hear that voice. I love that.
